There were years when I couldn't watch the news without wondering if something had happened to him. Every late-night phone call made my heart stop for a second.

I tried not to let him see how worried I was. He already had enough to carry without feeling responsible for my fear too.

The truth is, I knew I couldn't protect him while he was out there. All I could do was pray that God would watch over him when I couldn't.

There were a lot of promises, and for a while, none of them seemed to last. I wanted to believe things would change, but I was afraid to get my hopes up again.

Now I see him showing up for people, keeping his word and taking life one day at a time. He isn't pretending everything is perfect. He is just different — calmer, honest and finally free.

The day we received her diagnosis, I sat in the parking lot and cried before I went home. I was scared, and I didn't know what her future would look like.

At first, I spent a lot of time wishing things could be easier for her. I worried about what she might miss out on and whether the world would understand her.

But as she grew, I started seeing things differently. She is funny, determined, loving and completely herself. She has taught our family more about patience, courage and joy than I ever expected.

I used to pray that she would be more like the other children. Now I pray that other children will have the chance to know someone like her.

At that point in my life, I didn't think church was for someone like me. I had made too many mistakes, and I assumed I would be judged the minute I walked through the door.

But he never pressured me or treated me like I needed to be fixed. He just kept being there. He listened, encouraged me and showed me kindness when I didn't feel like I deserved it.

Over time, I began to understand what grace really meant. It wasn't about cleaning myself up enough to earn God's love. It was about receiving something I could never earn in the first place.
